  • Aircraft Lightning Environment and Related Test Waveforms

    ARP5412B - National Technical Systems

The waveforms provided in the ARP5412 are considered to be adequate for the demonstration of compliance for the protection of an aircraft and its systems against the lightning environment and should be applied in accordance with the aircraft lightning strike zones (see ARP5414) and test methods (see ARP5416), and applicable FAA and EASA advisory and interpretive material.

  • Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)

    National Technical Systems

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measures Specific Heat Capacity, Heat of Transition, and the Temperature of Phase Changes and Melting Points. DSC measures the rate of heat flow, and compares differences between the heat flow rate of the test sample and known reference materials. As a sample undergoes a transition (melting, crystallization, etc.), heat is absorbed or emitted. This change in heat flow is then measured by the system and can be analyzed. The difference determines variations in material composition, crystallinity and oxidation.

  • Over the Air Antenna Testing

    National Technical Systems

During research and product development of any Internet of Things (IoT) device or Machine to Machine (M2M) product, it is important to make sure the antennas designed or selected will perform the way they are intended. For example, when designing an antenna for a large stationary device like a vending machine, it is likely installed or placed against a wall. Designing or selecting an antenna that concentrates its energy and radiates toward the front of the device would be ideal for this environment. In the case of a mobile device, like a smart phone, it is important for the antenna to radiate in all directions and not lose communication link when the user moves around or faces a particular direction away from the cell tower. Over-the-Air antenna testing and measurements are the only way to qualify the entire signal path and antenna pattern of a wireless device.

  • Indirect Effects Lightning Testing

    National Technical Systems

The indirect effects of lightning are caused primarily by earth-voltage rises that occur when the flash dumps charge into the earth and by the intense electromagnetic field associated with the flash. These fields and earth-voltage rises have enough energy to cause component damage up to a kilometer or more from the actual strike. Indirect effects are most commonly induced into system interconnecting cables and may damage or upset electronic components.

  • Wi-Fi Testing

    National Technical Systems

NTS has been testing wireless home networking devices (typically referenced as “Wi-Fi” devices) almost since their introduction. Since 1999, NTS has been perform testing of wireless LAN products based on the IEEE-802.11 standard (e.g., 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, and even the latest drafts of 802.11ac and 802.11ad). Wi-Fi products are typically designed to allow you to connect your personal computer to a wireless network typically connected to the Internet. Wi-Fi “hot-spots” are available in locations across the country (e.g., coffee shops, hotels, etc.), and have become common-place. However, Wi-Fi is expanding into other areas, including healthcare and smart energy (e.g., connecting your smart device to the internet to track energy usage, etc.).

  • Smart Home/Home Automation Testing

    National Technical Systems

TS is uniquely situated to help manufacturers in the development, testing and certification of the smart home/home automation products. We can test with a wide variety of other home automation products, using protocols such as ZigBee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth to see how your product functions. We can perform RF performance and coexistence testing to help you evaluate issues that your customers may see in their own homes, and how you can address them. In addition, we also are able to assist multiple system operators (MSOs) in the roll-out of home automation and home security products to their customers. In addition, we are an authorized ZigBee certification lab, and have test tools specifically focused on validate ZigBee Home Automation, ZigBee Smart Energy, and ZigBee Remote Control profiled products. NTS has also developed an Installer Tool to assist MSOs and installers in the setup and configuration of home automation/home security products.

  • Lithium-Ion Battery Testing

    National Technical Systems

The market for lithium-ion batteries is expected expand to more than $87 billion by 2027. Lithium batteries have higher energy density and lower discharge rate compared to nickel-metal hydride and lead acid batteries—and costs continue to drop. With more advantages than traditional batteries, a wide range of industries rely on lithium batteries, including automotive (particularly in the electric vehicle sub-sector), aerospace, defense, and medical, telecommunications, industrial, and consumer electronics. To ensure batteries are properly tested and safe to operate in real-world scenarios for the above industries, NTS conducts robust testing.

  • Pneumatic Testing

    National Technical Systems

NTS Santa Clarita is home to our largest pneumatics test capabilities. The pneumatics test facility is designs to conduct testing of air flow, pressure and temperature management subsystems and components requiring compressed air in a controlled environment. Other environments which can be combined with pneumatic testing include; external thermal control, structural stress, and vibration.

  • Photovoltaic Testing

    National Technical Systems

Around the world, solar and other renewable energy technologies are seeing widespread adoption in both residential and commercial applications. As prices drop, and governments continue to offer tax rebates and other incentives for switching from fossil fuels, the market for solar devices will continue to grow. With this growth, there will be an increased need for photovoltaic testing services to confirm new products meet consumer demands for safety and performance. A growing market is also likely to mean increased regulatory demands — something that will require sophisticated partnerships and industry expertise to keep up with.

  • Vibration Testing

    National Technical Systems

From sub-atomic particles all the way up to skyscrapers, internal movements and motions resulting from the absorption of energy make all objects vibrate to some degree. This fact means that in a world filled with energy and movement, vibrations — or the oscillating responses of objects when moved from a position of rest — are the norm.

  • Hydraulic Cleaning

    National Technical Systems

NTS provides highly controlled hydraulic cleaning services for any aerospace components requiring it. We can also perform particle analysis that identifies the chemical makeup of residue on stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, beryllium and composite components, as well as fluid testing to identify various factors that can affect the performance of your hydraulic equipment.

  • Flexural or Bend Testing

    National Technical Systems

There are generally two types of bending tests. Three-point bend and 4-point bend. The materials that are tested using the flex test method vary from metal, plastic, wood, laminates, particle board, dry wall, ceramic tile, to glass. Bending tests vary greatly based on the product being tested.

  • Solder Joint Reliability Testing

    National Technical Systems

Solder joint reliability is defined as the ability of your product’s solder joints to function under given conditions and for a specified period of time without exceeding acceptable failure levels.Whether you are trying to implement a new solder type or new component types, solder joint reliability testing is essential in providing confidence that your product will perform within its intended operating limits. The results from different test programs can be compared to provide an understanding of design requirements for adequate reliability. This provides you with useful technical information for future designs, saving you time and money.

  • Usability Testing | Look & Feel Testing

    National Technical Systems

NTS can assist you in determining the usability of your product by providing end-user analysis with various user experience (e.g., novice, intermediate, expert, etc.). NTS coined the phrase “Look and Feel” from the term, “User-Centered Design” or (UCD) by Wesley E. Woodson. Woodson defined UCD, “As the practice of designing products so that the user can perform required use, operation, service and supportive tasks with minimum stress and maximum efficiency.” UCD is an in-depth process of analysis of usability both qualitatively and quantitatively that requires a large amount of time and money. And in today’s competitive market, most developers can’t afford this approach.
