  • Viscometers

    PCE Instruments

A viscometer, viscosity meter or rheometer is a measuring instrument used to determine a fluid's internal flow resistance or viscosity. The term viscosity typically refers to shear viscosity, i.e., how a material reacts to being sheared. Rotational viscometers with rotating spindles or rotors, also known as "cup and bob" or Searle viscometers, are the most common tools used to measure the shear viscosity of fluids. However, a fluid's viscosity also may be measured on the basis of stretching. The technical term to refer to this is extensional viscosity.A viscometer is frequently used in laboratories, but it also has practical applications in factories and other industrial environments. A viscometer can be an important component in process and quality control. Companies can save money by placing a viscometer in a production line and making fluid viscosity measurements in real time.PCE Instruments offers a variety of handheld, portable, benchtop and in-process, real-time viscometer products that measure the absolute / dynamic (shear) and kinematic viscosity of fluids. Handheld or portable viscosity meter devices allow users to take simple, single-point measurements in the field and in the lab. Benchtop or stationary viscometer devices are complex rheological measuring systems that allow for a more detailed examination of liquid samples.

PCE Instruments carries a variety of temperature meter products, including temperature meter devices to measure different temperature ranges between -200 and 1767ºC / -328 ... 3212ºF; temperature meter devices that can indicate temperature in °C (Celsius), °K (Kelvin) and °F (Fahrenheit); and temperature meter devices that are water resistant. In addition, a number of thermal elements and type-K sensors are available for different temperature meter products. Each temperature meter comes factory calibrated to ensure accurate measurement. ISO-certified calibration, performed by one of our first-class calibration laboratory partners, may be obtained on most temperature meter models for an additional fee.A temperature meter is an instrument used to measure the temperature of beings or things. The most widely recognized temperature meter is a mercury thermometer used to measure the temperature of people. These thermometers consist of a graduated glass capillary with a pool of mercury in one end. However, there are many different types of temperature meters, such as digital thermometers that take temperature measurements on contact with an object or infrared temperature meters that take measurements at distance, without contact.

  • Paper Moisture Meters

    PCE Instruments

A paper moisture meter measures the humidity of paper and paper products. Use of a paper moisture meter can prevent costly damages resulting from paper expansion or shrinking. A paper moisture meter determines paper moisture content based on either absolute humidity or relative humidity. Absolute humidity does not take into consideration temperature, while relative humidity relies on temperature and is expressed as a percentage of the total amount of moisture possible at the current temperature. Thus, many paper moisture meter devices feature automatic temperature compensation (ATC).For paper producers, paper manufacturers, paper mills and others in the pulp and paper industry, moisture and humidity control is essential, especially during the production process, as excessive moisture can lead to warming of the paper rolls. A paper moisture meter can be used to detect moisture streaks during the paper production process as well as to identify optimal drying times.Regardless of whether paper is stored in paper rolls in paper converting plants or stacked in sheets and paper bales in commercial printing warehouses, the porous surface of paper gradually takes in moisture relative to the humidity of the surrounding environment. This moisture can be problematic, as too much moisture can cause curling, buckling or the formation of waves in otherwise flat paper products. Moisture also can prevent inks, dyes, paints and coatings from covering and saturating paper properly during printing and processing.PCE Instruments (PCE) offers digital handheld moisture meter devices for measuring the moisture content of paper and paper products such as cardboard, paperboard, corrugated boxes, craft paper, wrapping paper, brown packaging paper, butcher paper, recycled paper, coated paper and more. Different paper moisture meter models utilize different paper moisture measuring techniques, performing moisture content tests of paper products via either destructive or nondestructive methods. Typically, a standard pinless paper moisture meter is nonpenetrating, thus allowing for the nondestructive measurement of paper water content.

  • Particle Counters

    PCE Instruments

A particle counter is a useful tool for monitoring indoor air quality (IAQ) in clean rooms and workplaces, as a particle counter measures the concentration of particles in the air. While a particle counter won't identify specifically what kinds of dusts or particulates are present in the air, a particle counter will identify how many airborne particles of a certain size are present in the environment. A conclusion is then drawn based on the known materials in the area and the corresponding airborne particle sizes of those materials. Here at PCE, We can offer you a wide range of dust particle analyzers to suit your needs.

  • Geiger Counters

    PCE Instruments

A geiger counter detects nuclear radiation by measuring the emission of ionizing radiation of alpha particles, beta particles and gamma rays. Also referred to as a radiation detector, a geiger counter consists of two main elements: the processing electronics and the geiger tube. The geiger tube is filled with low-pressure inert gas like helium, argon or neon. If radioactive radiation occurs, the inert gas is ionized. An anode within the geiger tube registers the quantity of ionized particles numerically correlating with the strength of the radioactive radiation. The radioactivity measurement is then displayed on the LCD screen of the geiger counter or radiation detector. It is very important to measure radioactivity as well as to classify radioactivity values. For example, terrestrial gamma radiation is measured according to general values from 0.03 - 0.3 µSv/h (microsievert / hour). This "normal" oscillation range is conditioned by natural radioactive elements in the ground such as uranium and potassium. To calculate this factor, one must take into consideration cosmic radiation. For example, when considering cosmic radiation, the maximum radioactivity content at Schneefernerhaus, the highest-located German environmental research station, is approximately equal to 110 µSv/h.At PCE Instruments, you will find three types of geiger counter or raditation detection devices to help you measure radioactivity: 1) alpha radioactivity meters, 2) meters for detecting alpha, beta and gamma radioactivity and 3) radioactivity meters for human beings.

  • Hygrometers

    PCE Instruments

A hygrometer is a device used to measure humidity. Many hygrometer products also measure temperature. A hygrometer that measures both humidity and temperature often is referred to as a thermo-hygrometer. PCE Instruments (PCE) offers a wide variety of hygrometer products used to measure the relative humidity of the air.Since humidity is an important factor in many sectors including but not limited to manufacturing, agriculture, construction, restoration, remediation and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), PCE also carries a number of hygrometer devices designed for specific applications such as measuring the humidity in bales of pressed hay or in rolls of paper. A hygrometer also can be used to evaluate heat stress risk in hot work environments like boiler rooms, factories, construction sites and commercial bakeries. To accurately assess heat stress risk, a hygrometer capable of detecting and classifying temperature in relation to the amount of moisture content in the air is recommended. The global standard description for heat stress is the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature Index (WBGT). A combination hygrometer / thermometer, or thermo-hygrometer, can be used to verify the integrity of the cold chain during the transport and warehousing of refrigerated food and pharmaceutical products. This versatile and popular style of hygrometer also is ideal for evaluating the performance of HVAC systems in industrial, commercial and residential properties. If the humidity indoors is too high, mold can occur. Certain types of mold cause respiratory problems and other negative health effects for people living or working in the surrounding environment. In addition, mold that has permeated into the walls or roof of a structure must be removed for safety reasons. Mold remediation and removal, also called mold damage restoration, can be a costly endeavor, which is why preventative monitoring of the humidity indoors is preferable whenever possible.

  • Roughness Testers

    PCE Instruments

Roughness is an important parameter when trying to find out whether a surface is suitable for a certain purpose. Rough surfaces often wear out more quickly than smoother surfaces. Rougher surfaces are normally more vulnerable to corrosion and cracks, but they can also aid in adhesion. A roughness tester is used to quickly and accurately determine the surface texture or surface roughness of a material. A roughness tester shows the measured roughness depth (Rz) as well as the mean roughness value (Ra) in micrometers or microns (µm). Measuring the roughness of a surface involves applying a roughness filter. Different international standards and surface texture or surface finish specifications recommend the use of different roughness filters. For example, a Gaussian filter often is recommended in ISO standards.
