Broadband fiber optic light sources utilize amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) within optically pumped rare earth-doped fibers. The spectral width of such light sources can be set by the developer in a range from a few nm to the full width of the emission spectrum of the active ion (e.g. erbium ion).
