Dielectric Constant (DC) and Dissipation Factor (DF)
Dielectric Constant is used to determine the ability of an insulator to store electrical energy. The dielectric constant is the ratio of the capacitance induced by two metallic plates with an insulator between them to the capacitance of the same plates with air or a vacuum between them. Dissipation factor is defined as the reciprocal of the ratio between the insulating materials capacitive reactance to its resistance at a specified frequency. It measures the inefficiency of an insulating material. If a material were to be used for strictly insulating purposes, it would be better to have a lower dielectric constant.

Pyroelectric and Thermal Testing
The optional Chamber Task measures the Pulse Polarization response and Small Signal Capacitance of a Pyroelectric material that is being heated and/or cooled within a thermal chamber, on a hot chuck or in a furnace. From these measurements the Spontaneous Polarization Pr(q) and the Dielectric Constant er(q) are computed. These are then combined to determine the Electrical Displacement D(q) as a function of the temperature q.

HV Power & Transient Isolators
B-1020-C
These supply 120V or 240V AC continuous power for equipment that must operate while at a high voltage to ground or power source. For example, a fiber optic transmitter at the HV level for waveforms to be received and measured or recorded by grounded instrumentation might be powered by an isolation transformer secondary to primary either insulated by potting, oil or air. The low dielectric constant of air insulation provides lower capacitive coupling between the secondary and the primary or ground than would solid or oil insulation. The lower capacitance provides better isolation both at line frequency and especially at high frequency voltages such as lightning or switching transients.

Fluid Level Sensor
The output of the fluid level sensor is a voltage which changes in direct proportion to the level of fluid in the probe. The difference in permittivity between air and the fluid being measured changes the capacitance between the probe's two concentric tubes as the level changes. An RS232 connection to a PC allows the user to calibrate the fluid level and thermal drift compensation. The probe is factory replaceable, allowing the electronics to be re-used should the probe become damaged or if a new probe length is required.
