Film application in coating industry includes a broad range of different devices and instruments which are an absolute necessity for testing or evaluation. Only in this way the quality-related properties required can be tested, compared, documented and communicated in compliance with the requirements. Film application covers a range of instruments that can be divided in four groups: Applicators, Application tables, Application machines, Test charts.

A correct paint- or coating thickness is an important parameter in the surface treatment industry. The performance of a coating system is based upon correct application of this system following the paint manufacturers specification sheet. Each layer from primer to topcoat and individual intermediate layers are exactly specified with a minimum and maximum coating thickness. Often both a dry and wet film thickness is specified.

Hanatek Instruments
The Hanatek FST Film Shrink Tester is used to measure the effect of temperature on plastic films. The application of heat causes certain plastic films to rapidly contract; this effect can be used to seal and pack many items from food to consumer goods. The shrink effect is due to internal forces locked into the film during manufacture being released by heating, it is also known as linear thermal shrink or free shrink. The amount of shrinkage is dependent on the film type, thickness and sealing temperature. Testing the percentage shrink of a film ensures that it is suitable for a particular packaging application and establishes the correct temperature for that application.

Prescale -
Tekscan, Inc.
Prescale film is used to measure contact pressures. The film structure consists of micro-encapsulated color forming and developing material. When pressure is applied to the film, a red color impression is formed in varying density according to the amount of pressure and pressure distribution.
