Magnetic proximity sensors are characterized by the possibility of large switching distances, available from sensors with small dimensions. They detect magnetic objects (usually permanent magnets), which are used to trigger the switching process. As the magnetic fields are able to pass through many non-magnetic materials, the switching process can also be triggered without the need for direct exposure to the target object. By using magnetic conductors (e.g., iron), the magnetic field can be transmitted over greater distances so that, for example, the signal can be carried away from high temperature areas.

The UDC-ME allows two DTE devices (such as routers) to communicate within proximity of each other. The UDC-ME transmits data bi-directionally at clock rates of 1.2k up to 3.072Mbps between DTE devices. The unit is equipped with two interface slots that allow a host of serial interface cards to be utilized. The serial interface cards available are RS-232, RS-422/449, RS-530, X.21, V.35 and HSSI. The Serial Interface cards are interchangeable and may be mixed such as RS-232 to V.35 thus eliminating the need for an interface converter or changing expensive serial cards on a DTE device such as a router.

This is useful for various applications like particle (i.e. smoke) detection, proximity measurements, and even photoplethysmography. Using the correct frequency makes a world of difference when locating buried utilities. The depth of the utility, size, material, and amount of congestion (proximity of other utilities) all need to be taken into consideration for the correct frequency selection. Large diameter, direct buried pipes with bell housing ends that use insulators and rubber gaskets, such as water or gas require a higher frequency while smaller diameter, well-grounded direct buried or long distance in conduits work, better with a lower frequency. The VM-850 operates at a much lower frequency of 9.82kHz which is ideal for smaller diameter utilities such as CATV, power and telephone with less bleeding onto adjacent services.
