In our world of smart appliances sensing the physical aspects of our environment is key: we like to know (measure) temperature, sunlight, position, distance, pressure and so on, and use that information in our (control) systems. For that data to be processed the (analog) physical signals need to be converted to electrical signals: the function of the sensor.
