    For Surface Resistivity Readings: Place the meter on the surface being tested and press the test button . If the LED showing 10^6. is illuminated, the surface being tested has a surface resistivity of 10^6 ohms per square or less. If the LED labeled insulative, is illuminated, the surface under test has a surface resistivity is greater than 10^12 ohms per square. (Be sure the ground wire is not connected through the ground jack when surface resistivity measurements.) For Resistance to Ground Readings: Place the meter on the surface being tested. Connect the meter to a known ground through the ground jack. When the ground wire is connected through the ground jack, the meter will not measure surface resistivity. Press the center button and the illuminated LED will indicate the resistance 10^5 ohms or less. If the LED shows insulative ,the resistance to ground of the surface under test is greater than 10^12 ohms.

One way to measure impurities in water is to measure the electric conductivity of water. Absolutely pure water is a poor conductor of electricity.     The Air Ion Counter is a handheld meter designed to measure ion density-- the number of ions per cubic centimeter (ions/cc) in air. It measures this number separately for positive and negative ions (+ and - ions are usually present simultaneously). This instrument is a true ion density meter, based on a Gerdien Tube (Gerdien Condenser) design, and it contains a fan which pulls air through the meter at a calibrated rate. The standard model measures up to 2 million ions/cc (for comparison, outdoor air typically has 100 to 1000 ions/cc, both + and -). The 2 million range is sufficient for almost all situations except for measuring very close to electric ionizers or strong radioactive sources.
